reBorn In The USA

quiznos.JPG
I know Bruce Springsteen had to make his 9-11 album - the marginal 'The Rising' - but it is time for him to make a 'new-economy' Born In The USA. Tom Joad was a good update of Nebraska, so B.I.T.U.S.A. is due.

Bruce aside, I think I am going to try to keep things on the project-work tip as long as I can. I need health insurance to be sure, but working sucks - especially now. It isn't a surprise to me that companies tend to be run by little ass-weasels, but the ebb and flow of labor supply and demand has become so so so transparent in the last 5 or 6 years. When labor is tight, bring your fucking dog to work, have a massage, or just work from home if you feel like it. When labor is un-tight, you are the dog, you give the massages, and you will be working at work and home...if you are lucky enough to land a gig that is.

I know the American labor movement has a spotty track record, but if ever it was needed, it is now. Since the average worker seems to resist the idea that they too are capitalists, and can individually sell their labor by the same principals companies use to sell their products, the only hope is they would learn to do so collectively.

This over-simplifies a bit, but far from being socialistic, unions seem to me to be the closest labor ever came to being truly capitalistic. Why shouldn't workers gouge as they are gouged? Why should they give away anything for free? Why should they feel a loyalty that is never felt back? Why shouldn't they also compete?

But I digress...I got to get my suit to the dry cleaners.
